Brother Alejandro writes in with an urgent request:
I’d like to call an emergency meeting of the DFMM. Well, more like last minute, then emergency. Tuesday at the Rath al Fresco (at the Athenaeum) at about six. The packers/movers will finish with my home tuesday, and we’re staying at the Ath before we leave. Dinner at the Rath is a casual setting. Please let me know if you’ll make it, even if you are just a maybe for now.
The DFMM Monthly meeting will be held at my place this month.
It’s Wednesday July 15th at 7pm.
I’m moving to Miami in three weeks. So, it will be my farewell too. I have about 3 cases of wine to go through before I move – I don’t want to deal with the hassle of shipping them. So, that will be our theme that night – drinking the various wines I own. I’ll run the BBQ pit for food, beef or salmon or something.
Here’s to a DFMM branch in Miami!
If you need my address, get it from Corey or Ryan.

The next DFMM bowling night will be Wednesday, July 1, at 7pm at Chaparral Lanes in San Dimas. According to their web site, most of the alley is reserved for league play then (mark it zero, Smokey), but there are some lanes that should be open. On the flip side, since it’s league play, that means we probably won’t have to put up with black lights, strobes, or smoke machines. And their per-hour price is only $1 higher than at All-Star…
Sarahliz, who is currently unable to post to the Wolfen, says:
Hi all. Just a reminder that beer night is tomorrow night at our (Sarahliz and Brad’s) place @ 7:30.
We’ll be in the backyard (unless it’s rainy and cold, in which case we can be inside) so you can just come around back via the driveway. Call my cell if you get lost or anything else comes up. 213-361-8047
There will be beer and food. I’m still working out exactly what I’ll prepare food-wise but there will be grilled things (of both the meat and vegetable persuasion) and not grilled things.
See you tomorrow.
I realize this is the night after beer night, but that’s when the movies I want to see are showing. If anyone is still hung over from beer night, just roll out in your PJs and bring some extra beer to nurse you through the loud parts.
Join me at Mission Tiki this Thursday to see a double bill of “the Hangover” and the new Terminator movie. Mission Tiki drive-in is awesome, they don’t care what food or drink you bring in, you can smoke while you watch the film, the old guys working the gate I think are stoned half the time and IT’S A DAMN DRIVE-IN.
They also have corn dogs.
I like to bring chairs and sit outside when the weather is nice, and when it isn’t, you can huddle in the car and neck.

Last night Ryan, Brad, and I went to the new “300″ bowling alley in Pasadena. Here is my review.
Some of you reading this have been to Tokyo Delve’s Sushi Bar in North Hollywood. It’s sort of a combination nightclub and sushi bar. There is a velvet rope at the door, there is a constant and very loud soundtrack pumped out by a DJ, the waiters put on a dance routine to NSync, there is dancing of the Chicken Dance while standing on one’s chair (participation basically mandatory), etc. Now, the sushi there is not bad – but if you’re primarily going out for sushi, this isn’t where you’d go. You’re going for the multimedia extravaganza.
300 is kind of like that, but with a bowling alley. They are sort of aiming for this high-class cocktail lounge feel with the decor, with the special station that fits you for your house ball (no hunting around for a ball, they bring it to you), with the waiter-like dude who gets you your drinks at your lane but also takes care of taking your money for bowling. However:
- They had that whole dim lighting with black lights on the lanes thing going on, making it hard to see to bowl.
- The end of every lane has a big video screen playing the video for whatever song is on the sound system at the moment, which is distracting.
- The music played is very loud, and sort of randomly switches between genre – Shania Twain followed by Sonny and Cher followed by Culture Club (all things we heard there within the space of one game).
- There are no arrows on the lanes! Just the dots.
- The graphics on the scoring system are bizarre and not tremendously functional.
- It’s expensive – $5 for shoe rental and $6 per person per game during the 5pm-9pm time frame ($8 on Friday and Saturday).
So I would say 300 is the Tokyo Delve of bowling alleys, but if Tokyo Delve topped it off with really mediocre sushi.
If what you primarily want to do is bowl, All-Star is clearly the better deal, what with $3.50 shoe rental and $18 for an hour on a lane. I can’t speak to the drink prices, since I don’t drink, but I know Ryan had a beer.
As a Bowling Czar who is primarily interested in bowling, I withhold my Seal of Approval from 300 and will not be scheduling DFMM bowling events there.
I am going bowling tonight at 8pm at the new bowling alley “300″ in Pasadena (well, it’s actually the remodeled Bahama Lanes in Hastings Ranch). This is not an official DFMM function – I just felt like bowling tonight. Feel free to join me if you like – I won’t be offended if you don’t.

British bacon boffins have identified nature’s perfect hangover cure:
Elin Roberts, of Newcastle University’s Centre for Life said: “Food doesn’t soak up the alcohol but it does increase your metabolism helping you deal with the after-effects of over indulgence. So food will often help you feel better.
“Bread is high in carbohydrates and bacon is full of protein, which breaks down into amino acids. Your body needs these amino acids, so eating them will make you feel good.”
This is clearly the most important scientific finding of the month.

Gentlemen, Behold!
Two upcoming DFMM events:
May 6, 8PM, Bowling at Jewel City in Glendizzle. Ricardo will be there. Bring your bowling hats.
For May’s beer night, the DFMM has a very, very special treat planned: Beer night in Ryan’s back yard. May 20th. 7:34PM sharp. Contact Ryan for directions.
The next DFMM bowling night will be Thursday, April 9, at 8pm at All-Star Lanes. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY.
Also, to expand on Connie-Lynne’s previous post: the shop in question is the Western Columbia Pro Shop, at 633 S. San Gabriel Blvd. in San Gabriel (it’s a tiny shop in a strip mall). They (or rather, he, since it’s one guy) are running a special where you can get a ball, shoes, and bag for $109 plus tax. If all you need is a ball or shoes, just mention that Erich Schneider sent you and you’ll get the “preferred rate” on stuff (which is something like 30% off?).
